Why GoodData is Walking the Path to Wellness

Why GoodData is Walking the Path to Wellness

I know that I’m at my best while riding my bike. It helps me to organize my thoughts, think clearly, and react in a more balanced fashion. Because riding my bike helps me to feel well, I want our GoodData office lifestyle to become healthier. In a culture that promotes a sedentary lifestyle, I know that we need to change.

But for me, wellness goes beyond health. I want to join our GoodData Family members on a journey to connect to ourselves, in order to deepen our problem-solving and stimulate our creativity.

Why Personal Wellness = Business Health

The trend toward a sedentary lifestyle is bad for creativity, productivity, and ultimately-- bad for business.

Steve Jobs was a champion of the relationship between health and success. Jobs believed that walking increased creativity and often held walking meetings, and now this is backed by data. A new study by Stanford’s educational psychology lab has shown that creative thinking improves while a person is walking, and shortly thereafter.

But exercise doesn’t only make us more creative, it also makes us happier. The link between exercise and happiness has been well-documented, and now the link between the two has been confirmed with neuroscience. Studies have shown that the impact on stress levels, happiness, and satisfaction from exercise is immediate and long-lasting.

But how do we compensate for the fact that our lifestyle forces us to sit in the office?

Mindful Living is Good Living

This conundrum has spurred me to personally sponsor GoodData’s Wellness initiative. Our mission: to enable the entire GoodData Family to thrive by living a mindful and healthy life. We will do this in three ways:

We are encouraging every member of our GoodData Family to participate in programs that match their interests, as well as trying new things that will make their lives more delightful.

As we continue to roll out initiatives and programs to this end, I’m excited to not only change our company habits, but the lives of our GoodData Family. To echo the theme of our Wellness campaign: be healthy, live delightful.
