Three Keys to Getting Real Business Value From AI

As artificial intelligence (AI) continues to capture the attention of the business community, some predict that this technology will foster the greatest period of transformation since the Industrial Revolution. Up to now, most of the innovations around AI have been siloed in the hands of elite companies such as Google, Amazon, and Facebook. But that has begun to change.

In a recent article in Big Data Quarterly, I explored the key strategies companies must focus on to harness the power of AI and machine learning for their own organizations.

Train Your People. If your AI strategy is going to be effective, your business and technology teams must work hand-in-hand. Having a dedicated data team is important, but it’s not enough on its own. You have to develop a plan to ensure your investments will help you achieve a specific business objective, and make sure that your people understand how AI will get you there.

Get the Right Players in Place. While your existing teams know your business inside and out, you will still need to bring in a dedicated AI expert to guide the mission and fill in any knowledge gaps among key employees. These experts are currently in short supply, so finding the right one for your organization should be a top priority.

Find the Right Partner. Making your system work will require advanced predictive analytics; for most organizations, this means partnering with an external resource. It’s is critically important to find a data and analytics partner who can help you see the past and anticipate the future. Choose carefully, as you are going to need to lean on that company’s expertise for years to come.

As adoption of artificial intelligence increases, companies can no longer afford to sit on the sidelines. As businesses from every sector start ramping up their efforts to integrate AI into their offerings, companies must invest immediately into their own AI solutions or risk falling behind.
