How Cloud Business Intelligence Benefits Art Ecommerce

If GoodData is the “end-to-end solution in the cloud,” then Redbubble has become the end-to-end adopter of cloud business intelligence. As the finest online creative community and marketplace, Redbubble knows how to enable artists to do business. By adopting GoodData’s platform in 6 of our 7 departments, we have enabled ourselves to be more efficient and to make accurate, data-driven decisions.

For me, the choice between cloud and on-premise data solutions was simple. Since we started in Australia and expanded to San Francisco, the cloud is the only option for our data. That way, we don’t have to worry about data centers existing in cities over 12,000 miles apart.

Before we chose a cloud BI solution, we saw hours of time wasted on tireless data collection and analysis. Like many companies, we used Microsoft Excel to try to analyze all our data, and it often failed. In one particularly harrowing incident, our COO spent over 4 hours trying to piece information together for a presentation...not an ideal situation for someone leading an online community of artists and creators. Not only was the process to do any analysis cumbersome, it was also repetitive. We ended up repeating the same process on a monthly basis to produce the monthly reports.

Monthly and MTD tracking

Our executive company snapshot dashboard in GoodData.

Now all our data for sales, marketing, customer service, shipping, and more have been integrated into one analytics platform. Marketing uses the dashboard to get a quick overview of how the different channels are performing, and to analyze the impact of the promotions that the team runs. Our management team makes their dashboards a part of their daily routine, referencing them on a regular basis to see how the company is performing. In fulfillment, shipping problems are tracked by country, in order to identify hot spots of problematic shipping and fix them immediately. Most of our dashboards are set up with a snapshot of general activity that expands to a deep dive into a topic upon scrolling or clicking, making both high-level and detailed analysis easier for everyone.

With a user-friendly cloud BI solution in place, we can stop worrying about lost Excel spreadsheets and start to make smarter decisions for our artists and our bottom line. After all, no one wants to spend hours on mundane repetitive tasks.
