We've tackled this problem by using commodity computers working together in a cloud. This cloud computing architecture makes the platform scalable: increasing capacity is as simple as adding machines to the cloud. This architecture is also robust, since there is no single point of failure. Furthermore, CPU resources on this cloud are shared, meaning that users have access to processing power when they need it.
